Biography*Robert was musically inclined and could play the cornet, trombone, saxaphone clarinet and the harmonica. His instrument of choice was the cornet, and often he would sit and relax playing the harmonica. He also played with a dance band periodically in the late 1920's-early 1930's. Adela Belcik remembers that one band he played with was the Kana Band.

"I remember sometimes when Papa went to Weimar with a bale of cotton he would bring us some hard cnady. I also remember the watermelons and cantelopes he would grow and take some to town and try to sell them." Hilda Belcik Demel, 1997.

Biography*Caroline Koenig was born in February 1864. In High Hill she lived with her sister Rosina and later did housework for other families. In 1880 she was a servant in the household of a banker and his family in Schulenberg, Charles and Fredericke Poetzel and their children, Robert and Edward.

Caroline was married to Gustave Bender by Justice of the Peach, W. T. Roberts on January 16, 1866. Sometime later they moved to Washington, DC. In 1900 the Bender family lived on Nichols Avenue near 4th Street.

Gustave Bender was born in Germany in November 1858. He came to America in 1881 and settled in Fayette County. He was a strict school teacher in the Sedan School. In Washington in 1900 his occupation was listed as Government Clerk.
