"I loved Grandma's shrill voice as she yelled "Snip" at the dog she claimed to hate but we all knew she loved." - ReNee Belcik Nadeau, 1996.

"I can remember grandma sitting on the front porch eating watermelon. It is such a "southern memory". Marian Kainer Hollingsworth, 1996.

"I remember on Sundays "Mom" would kil

"Bra

Note*Theresia Popp, the daughter of Ferdinand and Mary Schneider Popp, was born on February 28, 1893, in Schulenburg, Texas. In 1895, her family moved to Nada, Texas. On November 8, 1915, she married
George Boenisch, the son of John and Mary Langer Boenisch, In St. Mary's Catholic Church in Nada.

They lived in Nada until 1921, at which time they moved to a farm in Garwood, where
they raised cotton, corn maize, and hay, along with cattle, hogs, and chickens.

George and Theresia bought their first car, a Model T Ford, in 1921. When Theresia tried to drive it
, she backed into the 4-foot butcher block by the windmill; she never drove a car again. A few years later, they bought a 1933 Chevrolet, so the children would not have to walk to school in the cold
and rain. One day, Theresia and George went to Houston to buy furniture. The next day, George, his son, one of his daughters, and a friend, went back to Houston with a flatbed trailer to get the fur
niture. On the way back while making a turn, the load shifter and fell off of the trailer and into the ditch beside the road. Many pieces of furniture were broken and damaged. George spent several
weeks repairing furniture.

During World War II, the Garwood area rice farmers employed George as a translator between the farmers and the German prisoners of war who were stationed a
t the POW camp in Garwood. Both George and Theresia could speak German and English.

In 1945, George bough his first tractor, of which he was very proud. George and Theresia were ac
tive and friendly people and like to visit and have company on Sundays. They liked to play dominoes and the card game, Tarock. Theresia always make kolaches and homemade bread on the weekend for her
children and grandchildren. She often had check soup with homemade noodles for Sunday dinner. She always had apples, oranges, and candy for her grandchildren. Theresia canned jelly and pickles for
her family and relatives. She also made several quilts; each of her children had several of her quilts; each of her 23 grandchildren has 3 quilts made especially for them. She also made many quilts
for her brothers, sisters, relatives, and friends.

George was a member of the St Joseph's Society; Theresa was a member of the Christian Mother's Society.

George co
ntinued farming until his death from cancel on July 19, 1964. Theresia stayed active with the farm work, especially with her half-acre garden, until she passed away on October 28, 1981. Both are bur
ied in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Nada.
