Note*John Iverson Roberts was born on February 27, 1816, in Gwinnett County, Georgia. He was the third of 11 children born to Step and Ellen Roberts. During the 1820's or early 1830's, the Roberts famil
y moved from Georgia to Benton County, Alabama, where they settled and made their new home. Benton County was one of the dozen or so new counties created along the eastern boundary of Alabama followin
g the last of the Creek and Cherokee cessions. It was in Benton County that he grew to young manhood and where he met his future wife, Crissa Barnett, the daughter of Uriah and Kazia Istily Barnett. F
amily records indicate that John I. and Crissa were wed on July 25, 1838. Seven children were born to them during the time they lived in Alabama, two of whom died in infancy. In 1853, John I., Crissa
and their five surviving children moved from Alabama to Attala County, Mississippi, where they were to make their permanent home and raise six more children. It was in Attala County that John I. was
living at the time of the

outbreak of the Civil War. With the outbreak of hostilities between the North and the South, John I., like most of his neighbors, enlisted in the service of the Confede
racy. Official Confederate military service records on file with the Mississippi Department of Archives and History indicate that he was officially enrolled in the forces of the Confederacy on March 2
5, 1862, presumably at Kosciusko, Mississippi. He was formally mustered into the Confederate service at Grenada, Mississippi on April 20, 1862. His service records indicate that his enlistment was for
a term of three years. Because of his age and position in the town, he was commissioned a First Lieutenant in Captain William V. Davis' Company, Mississippi Volunteers. This company of volunteers sub
sequently became Company "D" of the 30th Infantry Regiment, Mississippi Volunteers and soon adopted the name "Dixie Heroes". Apparently John I.'s term of service in the CSA army was of short duration
and was marred by failing health virtually from the

date of his enlistment. Declining health, in fact, forced him to resign his commission after only six months of service. He was hospitalized
throughout the summer and into the early fall. On September 20, 1862, he formally tendered the resignation of his commission, giving as his reason the fact that declining health made it impossible for
him to any longer render useful service to the Confederate cause. Following his release from the service, John I. returned home to his wife and family in Attala County, Mississippi, where they were
to give birth to yet another child. He remained a respected member of the community until his death, as evidenced by the fact that he was elected on several occasions as one of the magistrates of the
county. John Iverson Roberts died on April 1, 1879, at the age of 62. According to the family, he died of a broken neck. He was sitting on a barrel of flour while riding in a wagon, and when the wago
n hit a rough spot in the road, he fell off the barrel, breaking his neck. His

wife, Crissa Barnett Roberts, died on January 17, 1899, at the age of 80. Both are buried at Rocky Point Cemetery in A
ttala County, Mississippi. SOURCE: This sketch of John Iverson Roberts is reduced from material prepared by Howard O. Leach.

Note*Reverend George Washington Roberts was one of the prominent men and pioneer ministers of Bosque County, Texas, arriving there in October 1867. He then made his home at Iredell. He was born in Gwin
nett County, Georgia on January 28, 1833. He was the tenth child born to the family of Step Roberts. His father, Step, was a native of North Carolina. His mother was Elender Burgess, the daughter of M
ordecai Burgess. In 1836, Step Roberts, accompanied by his family, moved to Benton County, Alabama. George Washington Roberts early became familiar with farm work in all of its departments, and acqui
red a fair education in the public schools and by study at home. He was a close student of the Bible and, in 1862, was ordained a minister of the Baptist church. He was an active and zealous worker in
the vineyard of the Master and, in Alabama, had charge of congregations at Harmony Grove, Providence and Shoal Creek. In 1867, G. W., with his family and the families of Tully Caruth, Jesse Barker a
nd Napoleon B. Ross, came

to Texas, making the journey with wagons and buggies drawn by mules. They left Alabama on the 10th of October and arrived on the 8th of December at their destination, whic
h was on the Brazos River, six miles South of Kimball. In August of the following year, he purchased land in Bosque County, South of Iredell, and there built up a good farm of 415 acres. He erected a
comfortable home, substantial barn and other buildings, and the water was supplied from an ever-flowing well. In 1894 he moved to Iredell, where he died February 9, 1902. George married Miss Susan Ja
ne Walker in January 1853 in Calhoun County, Alabama. Eight children were born of this union. Susan Roberts died in 1885, and in 1886, G. W. married Miss F. M. Brennan. In October 1868, G. W. Roberts
organized a Baptist church two miles North of Iredell, with 12 members. The church grew and eventually had a membership of 150. In November 1868, the Baptist churches of Erath, Bosque, Hood and Comma
nche Counties held a convention at which 20 delegates were present. At that time, the indians were so troublesome that a man had to stand guard to keep them from stealing the horses, and the preachers
all wore firearms strapped to their waists. In all walks of life, George Washington Roberts took as his guide the precepts of the Scriptures, and was foremost in every movement for the religious adv
ancement of the community. Of him it may be well said that he was "in soul sincere, in action faithful, and in honor clear". SOURCES: "History of Texas - Vol 1" DAR Files - Nos. 284523 & 477713 Wills
