| Biography* | Anton Kahlich, Jr. was thirteen years old when he left his home in Bolten Moravia, Austria and emigrated to High Hill, Fayette, TX, USA with his mother, Rosalia Lopreis Kahlich Mareth, her husband, Franz Mareth and her four Kahlich children and the Mareth's daughter. Anton Jr.'s father a flour miller by trade died in Bolten in 1863. His mother then married Franz Mareth. They sailed on the ship KOLN and arrived in Galveston, TX, USA on May 5, 1871. From Galveston they journeyed by rail as far as Columbus, TX, USA and continued on to High Hill by ox team. On reaching High Hill, a settlement of Moravian settlers, Franz and Rosalia rented a house and land and those who could worked for wages. They later purchased a hundred acre farm, along with twenty five acres of woodland, north of High Hill (now Dittrrich Road), which became the Anton Kahlich Jr. family homestead. Anton married Theresia Wick the daughter of Franz and Anna Wick, one of the original families of St. Mary's Parish, High Hill. To this union thirteen children were born, two of whom died in infancy. The children, all of whom were baptized in St. Mary's church, all attended St. Mary's school. Anton was a good farmer and Theresia was a good homemaker, together they were self sufficient. Although Anton owned several hundred acres of land in the High Hill area, he purchased additional land in Lubbock and Lynn counties in the early 1900's. Eight of the eleven children moved to Slaton, Lubbock, TX, USA and Wilson, Lynn, TX, USA and farmed on land bought by their father. Anton displayed much influence in the area. Just before the turn of the century, a group of German immigrants seeking a better life, organized a confederation called the Deutsch Romish Katholischen Staatsverband feur Texas. The purpose of this organization was to unite German speaking societies, foster religious principles, promote social justice and provide for the spiritual and temporal well being of their members. On November 15, 1901 a charter was granted by the State of Texas to the "Sterbekasse der Deutschen Katholiken von Texas" (Death Fund of the German Catholics of Texas) of which Anton was named as one of the eight incorporators. In 1936, the name was changed to the Catholic Life Insurance Union with headquarters in San Antonio, Bexar, TX, USA. He served as President and as vice-president of this organization. Being an able spokesman, Anton served as the welcoming speaker and "Fest President" for the fifteenth Texas meeting held in High Hill in 1913. He was an ardent supporter to St. Mary's church and was instrumental in the building of the present St. Mary's church which was built in 1905. Anton was a church trustee, school board member, and president of St. Joseph's Society. He was also a director of the First National Bank, of Schulenburg, Fayette, TX, USA. He and his wife Theresia are both buried in St. Mary's cemetery in High Hill. | |
