Burial*Sallis, Atalla County, Mississippi, USA
Note*School records for Emmet show his middle initial was 'O', standing for 'Owen'. However, other vital records show his middle initial to be 'W', which stood for 'William'. This information provided by his daughter, Willa Mae Allen, who was not certain which name is correct. Emmet Allen was shot and killed by Leroy Falkner on May 26, 1913, for unknown reasons. An account of the incident follows as taken from the May 29, 1913 issue of 'The Carthagenian' newspaper: 'EMMETT ALLEN KILLED BY LEROY FALKNER - Unfortunate Affair Occurred Monday in Hopoca Community Emmett Allen, about 35 years of age, was killed Monday morning by LeRoy Falkner, son of Joe Falkner, who lives in the Hopoca community, about six miles north of Carthage. From obtainable information, it seems that the killing was the outcome of domestic troubles. On Saturday prior to the killing, Allen and wife and Falkner and wife went to the home of J. O. Bynum for the purpose of correcting a report that was circulating in the community and creating disturbance, the trouble being amicably adjusted. Monday morning, Allen, accompanied by his wife, went to the field where Falkner and his wife were at work, and soon after their arrival a fuss was started, Falkner pulling his pistol and firing six shots, four of which took effect, causing instant death. The wives of the two men were the only eye-witnesses to the tragedy and, as we have not secured a statement from either, will not attempt to give the details. Allen moved to this county about a year ago from Attala County and was married to Mrs. Cockroft, widow of the late Babe Cockroft. His remains were carried to Sallis for interment. Immediately after the killing, Falkner came to Carthage and surrendered to Sheriff Mills. Preliminary trial will be held before Justice Phillips at Carthage next Monday.' Sometime after Jessie's husband, Emmet, was killed, she tried to give her two children up for adoption. She made arrangements for the Baptist Children's Home in Jackson, Mississippi to take the children. On the day the children were to leave for Jackson, they were placed on a train which would take them to the Children's Home. Emmet's brother, Edward C. Allen, heard about what Jessie was doing, so he went to the train station, boarded the train and took Willa Mae, Jessie and Emmet's daughter, off the train. He desperately wanted to take little James Riley Cockroft as well, Jessie's son from her first marriage and Willa Mae's half-brother, but he had been advised that, since he was not related by blood to the child, he could be arrested for kidnapping. Because of this, he reluctantly allowed the little boy to remain on the train bound for the Children's Home. At the time Edward Allen took Willa Mae off the train, she was not quite two years old. He and his wife, Della Stonestreet Allen, raised Willa Mae as their own child along with their six biological children, and they were the only parents Willa Mae ever knew. It has been said that, after Jessie became 'unemcumbered ', she went to Meridian, Mississippi and worked there for a while. Eventually, she went to Seattle, Washington to live with her sister, Katherine Roberts Creme, who was working there with the Telephone Company as a telephone operator. Sometime, though, between the time Jessie's husband, Emmet, was killed and she left for Seattle, she supposedly met a man named Otho McDevitt from McComb, Mississippi. The story goes that this man followed Jessie to Seattle and that they eventually married there. However, I have been unable to find a marriage record for the couple. Jessie died in a tuberculosis hospital in Seattle from 'galloping tuberculosis, about 1927, and is supposedly buried in Seattle. Again, I have been unable to find any record of her death. I believe the reason I have been unable to locate the marriage and death records is because the n man's name I was given, Otho McDevitt, is incorrect.
