| Note* | Stephen 'Step' Roberts was born in Danville, Virginia on December 1, 1790. Step spent time in North Carolina in Caswell County and then moved to Gwinnett County, Georgia, and then to Benton County, Alabama. It would seem that he was married in 1809, but we do not know to whom. His first two children were born in 1810 and 1811. Step was married to Elender 'Ellen' Burgess, the daughter of Mordecai and Mary Brandon Burgess, on January 22, 1814 in Caswell County, North Carolina. Elender Burgess was born October 23, 1791 in Virginia. She is the mother of Step's remaining nine children. At sometime between 1820 and 1830, Step and Ellen moved their family to Benton County, Alabama (now Cleburne County). They were to remain there until their deaths, Ellen on August 31, 1859, and Step on March 7, 1871. Step is known to have made at least one trip into Mississippi to bring his granddaughter, Augusta Roxanna Cleola Roberts (the daughter of David L. and Nancy Hughes Roberts) to live with the John Iverson Roberts family. David L. and Nancy both died young, leaving four minor children. | |
