| Note* | Augusta was born April 12, 1852. According to available records, she was the youngest of four children born to David L. and Nancy Hughes Roberts. She was born in Benton County, Alabama. Mary Hughes Roberts died December 22, 1855, leaving her children motherless and, on June 19, 1856, David L. Roberts died leaving these four children orphans. David's father, Step Roberts, took the four children to raise. On March 28, 1861, James Marion Roberts requested that the court appoint his uncle, Charles B. Woods, as his guardian and, on April 12, 1861, Charles B. Woods was appointed guardian for all four children. Augusta was returned to Step Roberts at an unknown date. When her grandfather, Step, became too old to care for her, he sent for his son, John Iverson Roberts, to come to Alabama. Step asked John I. to take and raise Augusta. Step, John I. and Augusta all made the trip across rivers, through the woods, where there were no roads, back to Attala County, Mississippi. Augusta, later in her life, told about this trip and how they shot game for meat and how hungry they were for vegetables when, one night as they made camp close to a farm, the farmer gave them some fresh collard. Augusta thought that this was one of the best meals she ever had. Until the time of her death, she loved to listen to drums. She said the sound of drums carried her back to her childhood when she used to listen to the slaves' drums at night. Augusta was considered quite a good cook---this should be credited to her uncle, John I., who taught her how to cook. John I. raised her as one of his own, and Augusta and her cousins considered themselves as brothers and sisters. Augusta married Isaac Tucker Smith on March 28, 1872, in Leake County, Mississippi. Augusta and Isaac were to have 14 children. It is said that before her death, she reached a weight in excess of 300 lbs. Augusta died on May 12, 1944, at the home of her youngest living daughter, Vertna Ward, in Ruleville, Mississippi. She was an invalid for the last six years of her life.
