| Note* | Joseph Heinrich was born in Pohl, Moravia, Austria, on February 19, 1819. He was the fifth child of Andreas Heinrich and Theresia Rabel. He married Magdalena Kainer, who was born in 1813. It is unknown whether they had any children. Joseph and Magdalena emigrated to America with another group of Moravian families, leaving the port of Bremen on September 12, 1860 and arriving in Galveston, Texas on November 18, 1860, sailing on the ship JEVERLAND. From there they traveled by ox-wagon to Blum Hill, now know as High Hill, where they settled. Joseph and Magdalena are listed in the 1870 Fayette County census as living in the High Hill area. Magdalena died in 1871 at the age of 58. She is buried at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in High Hill. Two friends of Joseph and Magdalena, Franz Besetzny and Anna Billimek (the daughter of Andreas Billimek), who also emigrated on the JEVERLAND in 1860, were married in High Hill. They lived on a small farm next to the Catholic church property. Franz served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War, and died of injuries in 1870 at the age of 30, leaving his wife with their three small children, Aloysia Sofia (Louisa), Frank Joseph, and Charles John Besetzny. On September 18, 1871, Joseph married Anna (Billimek) Besetzny. They had two children, Ferdinand (F. L.) Heinrich and Anna Marie Heinrich. One of the windows at St. Mary's Catholic Church in High Hill was donated in memory of Joseph and Anna Heinrich. Joseph and Anna lived about two miles northeast of High Hill, next to the land owned by his brother, Wenzel Heinrich. He was considered to be an excellent bricklayer, and it is said that he was employed for the construction of the first successful oil mill in Texas, which was in High Hill. He was also a member of the St. Joseph's society of St. Mary's Church. Anna died on October 21, 1901; Joseph died a few months later, on January 28, 1902. Both are buried in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in High Hill. | |
