| Note* | The Holman Community was located on Pecan Creek, about thirteen miles Southeast of La Grange on the La Grange-Weimar road. It was a farming community and contained very rich and fertile black land. It was settled by Germans and Bohemians. At its height, it supported two stores and saloons, a blacksmith shop, a wheelwright shop, and a cotton gin. The original old Bittner home place is located in the Holman community a couple of miles past the Catholic Church on what was later known as the Meyer Farm. It was later owned by Dr Charles H Meyer, a grandson, who lived in Schulenburg. The original home place was comprised of 2,000 acres, and Charles A Bittner was a very good business man, who took care of money and business operations for many of the settlers of the Holman Community. He traveled frequently to San Antonio, Houston, and surrounding areas; taking care of business matters for the various settlers of the area. The Bittner burial plot is in the middle of what was later a pasture area, surrounded by an iron grill fence and a grove of trees. In 1979, it was in poor condition. Cattle were ranging freely over the land. It is believed there may be some unmarked graves by the condition of the ground. The last known burial was Charles Bittner, Jr who died March 9, 1933. | |
