| Note* | John A Bruns was a Private in the 5th Texas Field Battery of the Confederate Army. He enlisted October 12, 1861 in San Antonio at 22 years of age, serving under Captain Edmund Creuzbaur's Co. Artillery, Texas Volunteers. Records indicate, as a corporal, he was declared eligible for the Cross of Honor by the United Daughters of the Confederacy filed in 1909. A pension application by his second wife, Lisette Rhoden Bruns was rejected as the last record available listed him a a deserter. He had been transferred as a Corporal, to the 7th Battalion, Forward Artillery, for which there are no muster rolls on file. (Many of the records were never filed with the State or National Archives in Washington, DC. Many time they were destroyed to prevent capture by the Union Army or were just lost by those in command). Return of the 7th Battalion Light Artillery in February 1865 shows him as deserted sometime prior to February 1865 while on detached service, and no later record has been found to detract it. Desertion, in many instances can be misleading, as it can come about by soldiers being lost, joining up with other units, returning home because of dire need, etc. and no record of it being made with his original company. The old Bruns homestead was still standing in May 1980; however, it was apparently beyond repair. | |
