Joseph Anton Heinrich, the 6th child of Ferdinand Heinrich and Rosa Beyer, was born on march 3, 1891 in High Hill, Texas. His childhood and youth centered around the little country church and school
of St. Mary's in High Hill and the family farm. On October 27, 1915, he married Emma Miksch, the daughter of Frank and Anna (Billimek) Miksch of High Hill, Texas. The young couple was lured to t
he vast, fertile land available on the South Plains of West Texas, where one of Joe's brothers was already engaged in farming. Some friends and acquaintances had also migrated to the plains before th
em. Around 1920, Joe purchased 114 acres of land four miles west of Slaton. The property had a three room home where they raised seven children. To accommodate the growing family, in the late 1930'
s a six room house was built where the family continued to live. The homestead was eventually purchased by the youngest son, Joe D., who continues to live on the property. The oldest daughter, Iren
e, remembers an event in 1921, when Joe bought a Model T Ford and later in the year took the family for a visit to High Hill. The roads were not paved but some were fairly smooth. She remembers at o
ne point, it had rained and the road had deep ruts which made traveling difficult. Also, as they traveled south, they had to stop to fix a flat. The youngest of the children who was about nine month
s old at the time, became car sick on the trip. Another daughter, Margaret, remembers how Joe butchered calves and hogs as a means of food for the family. He took exceptional care and great pride
to make sausage with the right amount of seasoning and then smoking the sausage, bacon, and ham to preserve the meats. She also remembers helping him make cherry wine and the pride he took with the p
rocess to ensure good quality. In keeping with the tradition of the Heinrich family, Joe's hobby was music. He sang in the church choir and played the coronet with the local community brass band.
The community band played concerts in the summer time almost every Saturday night. The band also played at the dedication ceremony of Texas Tech University in Lubbock. The band also traveled to sta
te fairs and performed at those events. He installed the love for music in all of his children.
